For this letter, I didn’t start with a big theme. Just a loose idea of looks that feel right for summer. Honestly, these are some of my favorite letters to style. There’s a kind of freedom in them that feels different. Not that other letters don’t offer that too, but this kind has a more intuitive flow.
A.Court blouse (you could also go for something like this), Dries Van Noten skirt from a few seasons ago. It’s great because you can adjust the length to your heart’s content. Soludos espadrilles, Eliou shell necklace, Joie DiGiovanni bracelet, Jacques Marie Mage sunglasses. A classic wayfarer shape would work here too.
Most of the time, these lookbooks act as a pulse check on where my style is leaning at the moment. But since I’m often just running wild in my own closet, it starts to feel more like a vision of where I want to go. Case in point: a subtle '80s undertone, or some of the layering that probably makes more sense in-between period creeping up on us.
Here’s what I ended up wearing: this is the shirt, and the shoes are the Prada re-edition sandals (More sizes available here plus they are on sale! Similar options here and here). Lately, I’ve been feeling very La Piscine for the latter part of the summer—this was my attempt at channeling a bit of Jane Birkin.
Doen dress that comes with a scarf! I also love the look of this dress. I'm having a big mini dress moment, which is very new territory for me. Natalie Martin eyelet pants, vintage overshirt (something in this vein), another option for the shoes, Le Sundial necklace, and Starling hoops, which are very much my everyday pair.
That doesn’t mean there is a lack of cohesion between some of the looks. The sarong, for example worn as a skirt, or even as a cape. It feels like the sibling of the flip-flop. Both can ground a look that might otherwise lean too formal, without taking away the polish.
AYR flannel shirt, Chan Luu sarong, Stussy board shorts (the red colorway is sold out, I had to order mine from New Jersey! They’re still available in this color, or you could go with something in this range). Ancient Greek Sandals flip flops, which were the precursors to these, Loro Piana hat, Alex Mill tote, Laoli necklace. The glasses are from Jins, but something along the lines of this would work just fine.
Doen cotton-linen blazer (fair warning, this became a bit of a safety blanket while putting this newsletter together, so you’ll be seeing it quite a bit, haha), Partow Bermuda shorts, the bodysuit that everyone should know by now (here’s an alt without the sequins), and for an extra dose of quirk, I added this vintage Donna Karan belt, which just so happens to perfectly match my Renate Jacobs jazz shoes.
Jacket (alt), shorts (alt), shoes (alt), With Nothing Underneath sarong, Hunting Season bag.
The dress I’ve tried to part with, but clearly the universe has other plans. At this point, I think it’s staying. It’s SS99 Versace, a TRR find, and if you’ve got the $$$ and an IT40 and want to twin, the same dress is available here. If you’re looking for alternatives that may not be exact twins but still channel that Wet Hot Italian Summer energy, I’d suggest vintage Cavalli or something in this lane. Christopher John Rogers sarong (for similar hues, maybe this one or this one), and Le Monde Beryl heels (they were a Matches Fashion exclusive, so I’d head in this direction instead).
Alex Mill linen work jacket (you could also go the vintage route). I attached the Eliou x Cesta Collective charm to one of the buttonholes. The Valentino heels might feel a bit off color-wise at first, but the black in the shoes ties in with the black buttons. I also love the contrast between the laid-back, surfer feel and the high-glam energy of the shoe.
The linen shirt I’ve been somewhat living in this summer, a lightweight, slightly sheer sweater. The skirt is Prada from SS20, a find from my very first Prada sample sale. While it’s not an exact alternative, I really love the beaded and sequin skirts from Des Phemmes. They’re fun and flirty. Colbo x Sperry boat shoes, and if you’re wondering what makes these different from the rest: the colors are incredibly sophisticated, and they’re bendable and squishable. They kind of remind me of something Armani would design. The jacket tossed over my shoulder is Kallmeyer.
Wales Bonner knit dress that I bought from Matches Fashion ages ago (RIP). The dress is ankle length, but I faux-shortened it by tying a sweater around my waist. The sweater, by the way, is a v-neck cotton-cashmere blend from Donni. Dries Van Noten pants (They are currently on sale, $995$696. Dries might have the best summer pants right now—Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C). Co clutch.
Colbo quarter-zip (alt here), Kule t-shirt, Leset tank and sequin pants (for reference, I’m wearing a large. I could have gone with a small, but I wanted the pants to be really wide), vintage suede shirt tied around the waist, YSL Mombasa (though I think something like this would work too), several seasons old The Row sandals, but you could always go with something like a Teva.
A close-up of the layers. Matthew Swope necklace, Alexis Bittar bangle.
But more than anything, I just wanted to create.
I was at an event for Ox, and founder Jessica Busiashvili told me, and I’m paraphrasing here, that when an outfit feels off, change the lingerie. She was wearing a dress with the sheerness of frosted glass, just translucent enough to reveal her bright orange lingerie, which I thought was so riveting. Fun fact about me: all of my underpinnings are black, so it wouldn’t have had the same impact as my orange bodysuit does. That said, I’m partial to Fleur du Mal. The dress is vintage from Desert Vintage, and you can find similar options through the wonderful world of Etsy (1, 2, 3).
So many amazing pieces, Jalil, but most importantly buckets of creativity. Please move into my head so that I start seeing my wardrobe through your eyes :)
